History: The Prometheus Class was one of 3 major designs meant to fight the Borg. The USS [[Prometheus]] was comissioned in 2374. It was later hijacked by Romulan forces only to be retaken by the Doctor and the Prometheus's EMH. It exceeded all expectations in live combat, being able to destroy a [D'deridex Class]] Warbird. In 2377, It was part of the fleet that was present at Voyager's return.

Multi-Vector Assault Mode

The Prometheus-class

This is that ship that splits into three ships. Yeah, it's a really stupid idea: get three bad destroyer-size vessels from one bad cruiser-sized one. Oddly, it kicks Romulan ass even when crewed by incompetent holograms. Since we only ever saw it in one episode of Voyager, its abilities are dubious at best. The decision to split up the ship this way presumably takes advantage of limitations on the enemy's ability to target multiple opponents and vulnerability of shields to attacks from multiple directions.

On an engineering level, it means that the ship requires three sets of all of the major systems, only smaller then a single powerplant. While this does give the ship a level of redundancy, it is no guarantee that the vessel has more power available in either mode. While the central saucer section does not seem to have visible nacelles, it operates as if it does have warp drive.

Having three warp cores does look good on paper on a superficial level; however, it does mean that the ship has to include space for all those systems, reducing the remaining space for weapons, crew and other vital systems. This may be why the multi-vector assault mode appears to be dropped from the design.
