The USS Stargazer was a Constellation class starship, which fought in the Battle of Maxia. Jean-Luc Picard served onboard, and had command at this time. It was abandoned after the battle, and later refit by the Ferengi.
It was originally slated to be a Constitution class Starship, and would reuse the model from the TOS movies. However, they decided to change the designation. Constellation was chosen because it could easily be inserted in post-production.
