Thanos is a powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Attributes

Thanos has been described as "the most powerful being in the galaxy". Most of the powerful feats he has demonstrated have involved use of the "Infinity Stones", which allow the user to manipulate fundamental aspects of the universe when properly controlled. Even without the stones, however, Thanos has the physical strength, endurance, and combat skill to defeat the Hulk easily in hand-to-hand combat and to fight Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man simultaneously and give better than he gets.

History

Thanos is a native of the planet Titan, which is located in a distant part of the galaxy. When Thanos was younger, Titan was undergoing a resource crisis due to overpopulation. He determined that the solution to the resource problem was euthanasia: kill half the population of the planet, choosing those to be killed randomly to ensure fairness. The leaders of Titan rejected his solution, and Thanos left. The rest of the population of Titan later died out as the planet's resources were exhausted.

The fate of Titan convinced Thanos that his plan was the only viable solution to the problem of finite planetary resources and ever-increasing populations. Over time, he acquired enough resources to be an interstellar dictator, using his armies to conquer planets and eliminate half of their populations "for their own good".

Thanos has apparently been a ruler in a distant part of the galaxy for some time. He was the power behind Loki and the Chitauri in The Avengers. He was also involved in a deal with Kree renegade Ronan the Accuser to trade the "Orb" for the destruction of the planet Xandar in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Threat Assessment

Thanos appears to be trying to acquire the Infinity Stones. As each is a source of immense power, with all of them he would be able to implement his "solution" everywhere in the universe with a snap of his fingers.

To this end, Thanos has accumulated a substantial military force, consisting of the Chitauri and various other alien species. He has at least one large interstellar warship.

Thanos is known to have several adopted children, collectively known as the Children of Thanos. He presumably adopted them as orphans after conquering their homeworlds, bionically modifying them and training them for work as soldiers, agents, and/or assassins. Most of these Children appear to be unbreakably loyal, but his two youngest adoptees, Gamora and Nebula, eventually turned on him.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Thanos is a member of an offshoot race of humanity called the Eternals. He has tremendous superhuman strength, great resistance to injury, and the ability to generate directed blasts of energy. He has genius-level intelligence and knowledge of both technology and mystical forces.
  • In the comics, he is a worshipper and the would-be lover of the incarnation of Death. His motivations in the MCU fall more under the "well-intentioned extremist" category.
