From the Further Adventures of Luke Skywalker

Splinter of the Minds Eye was the first Star Wars Expanded Universe novel. Published in 1978, it was written by Alan Dean Foster based on George Lucas' outline of a possible sequel to the original movie.

The story contains no space battles and much of the action takes place in a fog-shrouded jungle. This was done because Lucas wasn't sure how much money he'd have to make the sequel. Also, Han Solo and Chewbacca were absent because Lucas didn't know if he could get Harrison Ford to reprise his role.

Many of the elements of the story were reused in later movies, e.g. Mimban became Dagobah and the Coway became Ewoks and Wookiees.
