Republic Commandos are the Grand Army of the Republic's driving force. If a tough job needs to be done, commandos go behind enemy lines to blast away at whatever is stopping the "regulars", whether it be an orbital cannon or a contingent of destroyers. If a job needs to be done, commandos can do it.
Republic Commandos are the brain children of Karen Traviss, who has annoyed the sector of Star Wars fandom that actually expects military forces of any kind to have plausible numbers, resources, and assignments.
