Padmé Amidala is a significant figure in the fall of the Galactic Republic and the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. She was the wife of Anakin Skywalker and the mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.

Queen of Naboo

Padmé served as the Queen of Naboo at the age of fourteen. During her term of office, the Trade Federation (acting on the instructions of Darth Sidious) instituted a blockade of the planet to protest interstellar trade taxes imposed by the Galactic Senate. The blockade soon became an invasion, and Padmé was forced to flee the planet with the aid of Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in order to ask the Senate for assistance. On Coruscant, her plea before the Senate was blocked by the political maneuvering of the Trade Federation, and she called for a vote of no-confidence in Supreme Chancellor Valorum at the suggestion of Senator Palpatine. Without waiting for the outcome of the vote, she returned to Naboo and successfully lead the forces of Naboo and the Gungans to victory over the Trade Federation's invasion force.

Senator from Naboo

Ten years after the Battle of Naboo, the current Queen appointed Padmé to represent Naboo in the Senate. Returning to Coruscant from Naboo to vote on a measure to grant Supreme Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers to deal with a Separatist movement, she was targeted for assassination. Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, were assigned to protect her. Leaving Jar-Jar Binks on Coruscant as her proxy, Padmé agreed to hide out on Naboo with Anakin at the urging of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. While there, they began to form a romantic relationship. She journeyed with Anakin to Tatooine so he could try to assist his mother, and later to Geonosis, where they attempted to rescue Obi-Wan from the Separatists. After the Battle of Geonosis, she secretly married Anakin.

Padmé continued to represent Naboo in the Senate during the Clone Wars, typically opposing moves to grant the Supreme Chancellor additional authority to fight the war. Her coalition was unsuccessful, however, and she was present in the Senate when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine declared himself Emperor. Informed by Obi-Wan that Anakin had turned to the Dark Side, she followed Anakin to Mustafar, where he had just assassinated the remaining leadership of the Separatists. When Obi-Wan, who had stowed away on her ship, revealed himself, Anakin accused Padmé of betraying him and attacked her with the Force. While not immediately killed, she soon died during childbirth while delivering the twins: Luke and Leia.
