Orbital bombardment is the act of a spacecraft or space station in orbit of a planet or moon firing upon it's surface, either against a spacific target, an area or the entire surface. From the 1950s onward, various ideas for orbital bombardment have been considered by military groups, although no system for orbital bombardment has been developed as of yet.

As it stands today, modern human civilization has no defense against a spacecraft parking itself in orbit and bombarding the planet, and as such we are currently defenseless against the threat of Alien Invasion.

Orbital Bombardment in Science Fiction

Orbital Bombardment by various means is quite common in science fiction, both as a Precision strike weapon and as weapons of mass destruction.

  • In the Star Wars, the best example of Orbital Bombardment is Imperial [Base Delta Zero]] operations, in which a single Imperial Star Destroyer is capable of steriziling an entire planet.
  • In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the Navy of the Imperium of Man is capable of preforming action similar to a Base Delta Zero operation known as Exterminatus.
  • In the Command and Conquer Tiberium universe, the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) has in its possetion a network of Orbital Ion Cannons for bombardment of surface installations since the 1990's.
