Nuclear weapons (also known as thermonuclear devices and atomic bombs) are pieces of military ordinance that release energy from a nuclear fission or nuclear fusion chain reaction. Such weapons are orders of magnitude more powerful than more conventional chemical explosives. The first nuclear weapon was detonated on July 16th, 1945, with the first military use of a nuclear weapon occurring on August 6th, 1945.
