A Laser (from the Acronym Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is a device which produces a narrow, intense beam of electromagnetic radiation. If a Laser system is fed enough energy in it, the beam can burn through material. The first laser was developed by Theodore H. Maiman in 1960. Pratical modern aplications for lasers for lasers include reading and writing digital information, security systems, scopes on weapons and precision cutting of certain materials. Several military orginizations have looked into using powerful lasers as weapons systems, but these are still in the R&D stage.

Lasers in Science Fiction

Weaponized Lasers are a common theme in science fiction, ranging from small arms to spacecraft scale weapons.
