Jar Jar Binks

Jar Jar Binks is a widely-despised Gungan from the planet Naboo, who later became an Ambassador for that world. Ironically, he is primarily responsible for the creation of the Galactic Empire by fielding a proposal to grant Supreme Chancellor Palpatine emergency executive powers.

The ASVS Theory

A popular theory on ASVS around the time that TPM was showing was that Jar-Jar was supposed to be a loveable character that the audience could identify with and be sympathetic to, making his eventual killing by Anakin when he turns to the Dark Side be a shock. Unfortunately for us, the unpopular reaction to Jar-Jar in TPM relegated him to obscure background shots and single lines in AOTC and ROTS, removing him from assassination.
