Infantry is a term for soldiers who are trained and equipped to fight on foot. Infantry are the most basic form of soldiers, and throughout history they have been the most common form of combat personnel. One of the primary purposes of infantry is to take and hold land.
Infantry in Science Fiction
In science fiction scenarios, infantry may also refer to human-sized, ground-based combat robots and power armored soldiers.
