The Clone Wars were actually a single, galaxy-spanning civil war fought between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The entire conflict was actually orchestrated by the Sith Lord Darth Sideous, who manipulated both sides in order to propel himself into the position of Emperor. The conflict was named for the extensive use of Clone troopers by the Republic.
