Captain America is a superhero from Marvel Comics who has become very popular as the star of three movies.

History (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

Steve Rogers was a young man of poor health at the onset of World War II, but he still wanted to join the army and serve the country. He was repeatedly rejected on medical grounds until he met Dr. Abraham Erskine, who decided based on Steve's personality that he would be a good candidate for his "super soldier" treatment, which would eliminate Steve's physical weaknesses.

Rogers underwent the treatment and became a healthy superhuman, but Erskine was assassinated by an agent of Hydra (a Nazi "deep science" organization) immediately after the process was complete. With Erskine dead, critical details of the process that he never shared were lost, and the super soldier program was canceled. Steve was redirected to promoting war bonds and given the stage name Captain America. While reasonably successful as a fundraiser, he still longed to fight the Nazis directly. While part of a USO tour in Europe, he learned that a unit of Allied soldiers was imprisoned in a Hydra facility behind enemy lines. Defying orders, he personally ventured behind enemy lines to infiltrate the base, freeing the soldiers and destroying it, making a personal enemy of Hydra leader Johann Schmidt in the process.

Recognized as an effective combatant and leader, Rogers received a field promotion to give him the legitimate rank of Captain. He assembled his own commando team, the Howling Commandos, and lead numerous raids against Hydra facilities, eventually defeating the organization. His last mission was to stop the deployment of advanced bombers powered by the alien Tesseract. While successful, he was on board one of the bombers when it crashed in the arctic. His super soldier treatment allowed him to survive the crash and being frozen, and he was revived in the 21st century by SHIELD.

Attributes

Treatment with the super-soldier serum and exposure to "vita rays" transformed Steve Rogers from a 95-lb weakling into a 240-lb athlete in a few minutes. As a result of the procedure, he has superhuman strength, superhuman endurance, and speed and agility at least comparable to top olympic athletes. With these advantages, he is more than a match for most human opposition, but he is still no match for powerful aliens like Asgardians.

Rogers has trained to become one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the world. He has also trained with his shield (see Paraphernalia) to the point that he can throw it with great precision and predict the rebound well enough to catch it again after most throws. In addition to his personal combat ability, he is an expert tactician and inspiring leader.

Paraphernalia

Captain America's iconic weapon is a round shield made of vibranium. The shield is virtually indestructible, and it's ability to absorb energy means that kinetic energy from impacts that he could not otherwise withstand is absorbed by the shield. Energy above an unspecified limit is reflected back in the direction from which it came. At some point, a technological device was attached that allows him to recall the shield to his hand (or his glove, to be precise), even if it is stuck in some object; the limits of this feature are not yet known.

He is also competent with firearms, although he has generally not carried any since being reawakened in the 21st century.
