The Age of Enlightenment was a period in European History from roughly 1600 to 1800 during which emerged the scientific method and belief in the power of Human Reason and Logic to solve the world's problems, in particular with the rise of the scientific method. It also saw the change of the established social order of nobility and clergy (known as the Ancien Régime) due to new philosophies starting with Hobbes and Locke, Politicking in England, Religious upheaval, economic changes (largely due to improvements in agriculture, maritime trade and the birth of colonial Empires) and the rise of wealthy merchant classes. This would lead to the emergence of modern western democratic traditions and the Industrial Revolution.
