Akbar began his public career living as a slave for the Galactic Empire. Whether it was luck or misfortune he ended up being the personal slave of Imperial Grand Moff Tarkin. While working for Tarkin, Akbar paid close attention to Imperial operations that Tarkin was involved in. Akbar was liberated from slavery when a espionage operation intended to capture Tarkin resulted in the disabling and boarding of shuttle that was suppose to be carrying Tarkin. The Rebel operative had gotten their intelligence wrong and only manage to board a shuttle transporting Akbar and some other minor members of Tarkin's personal entourage.
After being rescued from captivity he served in the Rebel operations that lead to the liberating of his home world from the control of the Empire and made the Calamari shipyards available to the Alliance for the production of capitol ships for the rebellion's navy. Soon he was in charge of the now growing Rebel navy and rose in the ranks becoming the chief admiral in charge of Rebel naval operations. While serving in the Rebel's navy he was part of the design team that designed the B-wing starfighter. He served as the primary naval commander of the Rebel forces taking part of the Battle of Endor.
