The acronym FTL stands for "Faster than light" and refers to any form of superluminal travel.
Most FTL systems make no attempts to conform with the laws of physics, but are merely accepted as handwavium. This is an essential part of most sci-fi series, to ensure the characters do not spend decades or centuries travelling between planets.
