Can we get the source of all these technical notes on the E-E? That's the kind of stuff that should be referenced. I daresay it comes from a non-canon source, which should definitely be noted. --Ted C 10:37, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Unfortunately all technical aspects are from onscreen visuals as any canonical sources on technical aspects of starships do not exist. Canon for Trek, of course, being just the films and tv shows. However I should note that I did place the film where I gathered this info from or saw happen on screen at the end of each entry and did note that the Warp Speed figure comes from "Ship of the Line" a non-canonical source that I cited in the description. I'm not sure how much more citation we're looking for. --User:Stravo
Stravohttp://www.stardestroyer.net/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701-E)&diff=2953Talk:USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)2007-11-15T20:51:26Z
Stravo: /* Technical Data Source */

* Regenerative shields - this allows the Enterprise to constantly reinforce her shields, rapidly alter frequencies and most importantly regenerate damage over time. This rate of regeneration can be adjusted by pumping more power into the shield grid. ("Nemesis")

* Quantum Torpedo turrets - seen most prominently on the lower half of the primary hull saucer section this turret allows the Enterprise to fire rapid volleys of quantum torpedoes. On screen we have seen up to 5 torpedoes launched in rapid fire mode like a machine gun. ("First Contact") How this system is superior to the Enterprise-D's on screen ability to fire a spread of up to 10 photon torpedoes however is unclear ("Encounter at Farpoint"). Perhaps the turret can fire more than five torpedoes at a time or its rate of fire may be superior to the Galaxy's torpedo system.

* Advanced Warp Drives - The Enterprise-E is capable of sustained warp of 9.985 however this has not been clearly stated in the films and the figure comes from the novel "Ship of the Line" However the Enterprise-E has been observed performing high speed warp sprints across large areas of space as seen in "First Contact" when Picard orders the Enterprise to maximum warp at the Romulan neutral zone right at the start of the Battle in the Typhon Sector and arrives 3-4 days later just as the battle is finishing over Earth.

* High Powered Phaser Banks - As seen by the damage inflicted by Enterprise on the Borg Cube in "First Contact" suggests a more powerful phaser suite and in "Nemesis" her rate of fire is certainly higher than the predecessor Galaxy class Enterprise.

All of these advanced systems and her up to date design make her worthy of being the Flagship of the Federation and carrying on the name "Enterprise".

History
The Enterprise-E entered service in mid-2372, just over a year after the destruction of the Enterprise-D. Commanded by Jean Luc Picard throughout its service so far the Enterprise has taken part in the Battle of Sector 001, the First Contact between Humans and Vulcans, critical diplomatic missions during the Dominion War, the battle for the planet of the Baku, and the Romulan Insurrection led by Shinzon halting his attempted destruction of Earth in a devastating battle that left the Enterprise a crippled wreck after defeating Shinzon's flagship, the Scimitar. The last time we see the Enterprise-E she is in Earth space dock for massive refits and repairs.

The Klingon Bird of Prey is a class of vessel that has seen service in the Klingon Empire for almost a century. It has become an ubiquitous warship of the empire used for such a wide variety of missions such as spying, reconnaisance, commerce raiding, and of course combat. Despite her age the Bird of Prey design is still quite effective even during the Dominion War where they fared well against the mainstay of the Dominion fleet - the Jem'Hadar fighter.

One cannot think Kliungon without immediately thinking of these vessels.

Technical Specifications
The Klingon Bird of Prey consists of actually two distinct sub-classes of ship.

The first is called the B'Rel class and is usually classified as a Scout or Fighter. It is small, agile and very light craft with a crew of about 20 Klingons. The B'Rel was first encountered on screen during the Genesis Incident when Captain Kruge took his Bird of Prey deep within Federation Space and destroyed the Grissom and ambushed and crippled the Enterprise. Pavel Chekov picked up the Bird of Prey for a moment on the scanners before she cloaked and classified her as a "Scout class vessel" (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) and Sulu verified that the crew compliment of a Bird of Prey consisted of about a dozen officers and men. (Star Trek III) The Bird of Prey in the movie novelization is classified as a Klingon fighter.

The second class of Klingon Bird of Prey is the K'Vort class cruiser which was a far heavier vessel designed to go toe to toe with Federation starships. The K'Vort class is first identified as such by Wesley Crusher during an attack by three K'Vort cruisers on the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-C during "Yesterday's Enterprise".

Despite the differences in class there are certain common features that the ships all share.

* Cloaking Device - all Klingon Bird of Preys are equipped with a cloaking device. During the Genesis incident the cloaking device on Kruge's vessel emitted a visible distortion effect especially when the ship was in motion. No similar distortion effect has been seen in any other portrayal of the Bird of Prey cloaks which could indicate that Kruge's cloak was malfunctioning at the time.

* Disruptor cannons - all variations of the Klingon Bird of Prey sported rapid fire twin disruptor cannons with an impressive rate of fire. Even up through the Dominion war a steady fusillade of these cannons could destroy a Dominion fighter in a single salvo.

* Photon Torpedo launchers

* Variable Geometry Wing Design - the Klingon Bird of Prey has wings that can raise or lower at certain angles. What role the various wing positions play is unknown as the Birds of Prey have been observed to attack in all states of wing positions, raised above the hull, parallel the hull, and down below the hull.

There is one feature which the B'Rel class has that is unknown if the K'Vort class shares. The B'Rel have atmospheric capabilities. There is one possible instance where K'Vort cruisers may have also exhibited atmospheric capabilities. During the Dominion War an attack led by General Martok against a Dominion base on Trekla V has Bird of Preys decloaking and strafing a base on the surface. There is no mention of the class of these vessels but given the fact that they later took on Cardasian capital ships and Kor led his single Bird of Prey in a suicide attack on 10 Dominion fighters would seem to suggest this was a K'Vort class cruiser.("Once more Unto the Breach")

History
The Klingon Bird of Prey was first depicted during the Genesis incident in which it was instantly recognized by Sulu when decloaking suggesting the vessel was already in service for some time by the time it made its appearance in Star Trek III.

The Bird of Prey soon replaced the Klingon D-7 and the K'T'Inga class cruisers as the standard Klingon warship generally encountered by Starfleet during the Motion Picture era of Star Trek and even during TNG era it was an extremely common vessel probably produced in massive numbers given the inordinate amount of Birds of Prey encountered as opposed to other Klingon warships.

Out of universe note on the nomenclature of the Klingon ship, in early drafts of Star Trek III Kruge was supposed to steal a Romulan Bird Of Prey and use its cloaking device to carry out his illegal mission into Federation space but over time the vessel became a Klingon ship but the class name never changed.
Stravohttp://www.stardestroyer.net/wiki/index.php?title=Klingon_Bird_of_Prey&diff=2833Klingon Bird of Prey2007-11-14T23:29:20Z
Stravo: New page: The Klingon Bird of Prey is a class of vessel that has seen service in the Klingon Empire for almost a century.

A cloaking device is a form of stealth technology that uses selective bending of light (and other forms of energy) to render a starship or other object completely invisible to the electromagnetic spectrum and most sensors. It has been encountered in varying forms over the centuries.

The purpose of cloak is to obscure visual identification. Later versions of the cloaking device have been able to cloak vessels from all but the most advanced scanners and tracking systems. Cloaking devices have been usually used for stealth and its combat uses are limited usually to ambush tactics. For example the early cloaking device was a perfect supplement to the Romulan plasma weapon allowing the Bird of Prey to approach as close as possible to deploy the limited range weapon for maximum effectiveness.

The early development cloaks available were solely the proprietary technology of the Romulans. In the first recorded instance of military use of a cloaking device against a Starfleet vessel the Romulan cloaking device was completely invisible to visible light and standard optical scanners however she could still register on motion sensors and was tracked in this manner by the Enterprise throughout the engagement near the neutral zone. However this form of tracking proved inefficient in terms of targeting and precision movement, forcing Kirk to lay down a pattern of blind torpedo fire in a similar manner that surface vessels used depth charges against submarines. ("Balance of Terror")

Later on as part of an ongoing technology sharing program Klingons gained the cloaking device and Romulans abandoned the current warbird design in favor of Klingon vessels like the D-7 ("Enterprise Incident") Klingons were using cloaking devices on their own Bird of Prey designs as seen in the Genesis incident when Kruge's Bird of Prey penetrated deep into Federation space destroying the USS Grissom and ambushing the Enterprise utilizing the cloaking device. (Star Trek III: Search for Spock") It is interesting to note that the Klingon cloaking device was visible to normal vision at some distances especially when in motion, leading to speculation that such an obviously inferior cloak to the one the Romulans were using nearly 20 years earlier indicated either a malfunctioning cloak or perhaps this was a first generation cloaking device of Klingon design and manufacture since the technology sharing treaty with the Romulans was presumably over by this point in time.

As seen in TNG era and onward the cloaking devices available to the Klingons and Romulans have grown much more sophisticated. Klingons cloaks were so sophisticated that even when cloaking and decloaking within several kilometers of Deep Space Nine the sensor suites could not accurately track the Klingon vessels. ("Way of the Warrior") Romulan Warbirds were also able to approach the station completely unseen and decloak within several kilometers despite the station being at battle stations, a Klingon fleet and Federation vessels all within range and expecting a Dominion attack. ("By Inferno's Light")

One of the most recent evolutions of the Cloak's design was seen twice, once by Klingon design and another by the Romulans. General Chang of the Klingon Empire utilized a Bird of Prey that could fire while cloaked, a notorious Achilles heel of the standard cloaking device. This Bird of Prey was destroyed over Khitomer and was the only functioning proto-type. We have never seen a Klingon cloaked ship accomplish this again. The cloaking device used on the Scimitar also allowed the vessel to fire cloaked and was used with devastating effectiveness against the Enterprise-E. This would be the natural progression of the device should greater enhancements be made in the future.

The Federation is banned from developing cloaking devices in the Treaty of Algeron with the Romulan Empire. How this could have been imposed on the Federation and why the Federation has hamstrung itself by not developing this technology is amazing and practically unbelievable. Also the Federation did produce one illegal cloaking device - one that is a quantum leap ahead of anything produced by either the Romulans or the Klingons - a phase cloak that allows a vessel to pass through solid matter.

Vulnerabilities

In general, depending on their power sources, cloaked vessels are not shielded. Cloaking and decloaking generally creates a window of vulnerability, exploited by Riker in Generations to destroy a Bird of Prey.

The initial cloaking device was shown as extremely power intensive and nearly drained the power reserves of the Bird of Prey during its battle with the Enterprise in "Balance of Terror". One can speculate that the primary reason a cloaked vessel cannot fire while cloaked may be because too much power is tied into maintaining the cloak to properly power the weapons systems. This is hinted at when Captain Kruge warns the gunner to transfer power to the weapons "At my command." perhaps concerned power would be transfered too soon thus compromising the cloak. ("Star Trek III: Search for Spock")

Romulan officers do not consider the cloak sufficient to bypass prepared defenses (TNG Face of the Enemy).

The cloaking device can be pierced using some sort of Tachyon net.

The Scimitar in Nemesis was shielded during cloak. Worf was eventually able to target the Scimitar based on weapons fire and disable its cloak.

In certain rare instances cloaked vessels can be spotted by the naked eye such as in The Search for Spock, or the external visuals in Nemesis.

The Sao Paulo was a Defiant class starship assigned to Deep Space Nine to replace the Defiant after it was lost in the disastorus Second Battle of Chin'toka. Although it arrived at the station under the name and registry number of the Sao Paulo, Captain Benjamin Sisko received permission from Admiral Ross to rename the ship Defiant in honor of the lost starship.

The Sao Paolo went on to fight with distinction in the Dominion War and took part in the Battle for Cardassia Prime where the Dominion surrendered to the Allies and ended the war.

The Defiant-class starship is a small, combat-oriented starship used by the United Federation of Planets. Initially developed as a dedicated anti-borg starship the Defiant class was born out of the rash of technical developments and innovations that swept throug Starfleet when the Borg were identified as a threat by their encounter with the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)in system J-25. ("Q Who")

The Defiant class was constructed and designed at the Utopia Planetia Shipyards and Captain Benjamin Sisko was part of that design team. Construction was plagued with some slow downs due in part to a perceived lack of an immenent Borg attack and Engine design problems that plagued the starship even after construction was completed. The engines were so over-powered that they threatened the very structural integrity of the ship when powered up. It took innovations in the structural integrity field of the ship to bring this flaw under control.

The Defiant class was originally designated as an escort ship but this was just on paper to hide the fact the the Defiant was a dedicated warship in apparent violation of Starfleet protocols. The Defiant's main weapons suite is a pair of pulse phaser cannons that seem to provide more fire power than a standard phaser bank suite as seen on most starships. Coupled with standard photon torpedo launchers (later able to fire quantum torpedoes) gives the ship a very powerful forward weapons arc. As Sisko stated succintly in "The Search" "She's overpowered and overgunned"

The Defiant class also has experimental ablative armor that gives the little ship an extra edge once shields are brought down as the armor provides extra protection not usually afforded to Federation starships noted in particular during the episodes "Way of the Warrior" when the Defiant must withstand concentrated attacks from a Klingon Vorcha class attack cruiser (equivalent in firepower to a Galaxy class starship) for several seconds as shields are dropped to beam aboard memebers of the Cardasian Detaapa Council and in the episode "Paradise Lost" when the Captain of the Lakota complains about the ablative armor on the USS Defiant making it difficult to disable or destroy her. It should be noted that the captain also states that this armor is a secret modification of Captain Sisko's which opens the question of whether the abalatiove armor is actually unique to the USS Defiant and not standard for the class.

The Defiant class was uniquely designed in that her warp engines were kept in close and parallel to the hull as well as the spartan crew quarters and overall interior design of the ship. Doctor Bashir complained about the bare medical bay that was inadequate to deal with serious injuries as well as lacking any sort of laboratory facilities as in other starships. No families could travel on the Defiant and her crew compliment was normally kept around 47.

The Defiant class proved time and again she was more than a match for many vessels her size or larger. During the Klingon-Cardassian war she routinely defeated Birds of Prey in combat and withstood attacks from multiple Klingon warships many times her size such as the Vorcha class attack cruiser. ("Way of the Warrior") The USS Defiant when stolen by Tom Riker also proved more than capable of defeating heavy ships such as the Keldon class destroyers secretly upgraded by the Obsidian Order of the Cardassian Union. ("Defiant")

The Defiant class also performed admirably in her first encounter with the enemy she was designed to battle - the Borg, when she was among the surviving vessels of the Starfleet task force that fought a running battle over several days from the Typhon sector to Earth against a Borg Cube. Scoring damaging hits against the far larger Borg cube she was finally disabled by a concentrated Borg counter attack attack out lasting many starships far larger. ("First Contact")

During the Dominion War the Defiant class starships were usually seen as more than a match for the Jem'Hadar fighters and only truly outgunned and outclassed by such juggernaughts as the Dominion battleships. ("Valiant") The Defiant class ships were the first Federation starship to score a kill against Dominion naval forces ("The Search") and were instrumental in almost every major engagement of the war.

CLASS: Galaxy
REGISTRY: NCC-71832
CAPTAIN: Keogh

The USS Odyssey was charged with rescuing Captain Benjamin Sisko and Quark who were being held by the Dominion near the entrance to the wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. After off loading non-essential civilian personnel at Jadzia Dax's suggestion the Odyssey transited the worm hole accompanied by a pair of runabouts from DS9.

The Odyssey was set upon by three Dominion attack fighters. Captain Keogh and his crew rapidly discovered that main Dominion weapon, phased anti-polaron beams, easily pierced standard Federation shields heavily damaging the far larger vessel in a rapid series of attack runs by the Dominion forces.

Keogh was forced to drop his shields and transfer power to his weapons in the hopes of driving off the Dominion forces and used his Runabout escorts to harass the Dominion ships and give the stricken vessel some breathing room.

Valiantly holding off the Dominion attack and giving the runabout crewed by Chief Obrien enough time to beam Captain Sisko, Quark and Eris (A Dominion prisoner discovered by Sisko on the planet surface) aboard, the Odyssey, limping with a badly damaged nacelle, led the retreat back to the wormhole. At this point the battle was obviously won by the Dominion as they had easily driven off one of the top line starships of the Federation with no losses to themselves and apparently light to no damage to the fighters, gathered valuable combat intelligence on Starfleet weapons and tactics as well as unbenownst to Starfleet planting a spy in their midst in the form of the Vorta Eris.

The Jem'Hadar had one more lesson to teach the Federation. One of the Dominion fighters accelerated rapidly and performed a ramming manuever into the forward secondary hull of the shieldless starship. Debris from the impact and secondary explosions struck the badly damamged nacelle initiating a catastrphoc loss of containment and the Odyssey was lost with all hands.
