Robert Scott Anderson -- otherwise known as RSA, DarkStar, Guardian2K, Guardian2000, DSG2k, "DorkStar," and "Scooter" -- is considered one of SDN's most obsessed ex-members. One of the most stubborn Trek debaters in the ST VS SW debate, he's considered a classic example of broken record debating and sheer dishonesty, as exemplified by the bands of brightness debate or the "SW humans have metal spines" claim. He has been dubbed by many to be a Timothy Jones clone and is mocked by both sides of the debate.

He also runs a blog that spends a portion of its time attacking Stardestroyer.net and some of its more notable members such as Wayne Poe and Mike Wong.
Quotes
*"He's really good at appearing reasonable while making the most ridiculous claims. I caught myself about to fall for one earlier. Won't happen again, but it's unnerving."
*"But as the saying goes, 'if the facts are against you, argue the law ... if the law is against you, argue the facts ... if the facts and the law are against you, yell like hell.' Highwind, et al., that's your cue. I've made my point."
:-- DarkStar accusing Star Trek writer Mike Sussman of dishonesty for disagreeing with him about the ENT episode "The Augments", an episode that Mike Sussman wrote. DarkStar would subsequently demand that his words be deleted from memory-alpha.org.

*"If I had to use two words to describe this site, I would choose 'nuts' and 'fucking,' although not in that order. In addition, I would repeat the word 'fucking' approximately 15,000 times for emphasis, as this is simply the most ridiculous and ungodly site I have ever gazed my eyes upon."

Karen Traviss is the author of several Star Wars novels (including the "Republic Commando" series) and the originator of the ridiculous figure of three million clones for the entire Republic Army. She is also guilty of extreme Mando-wanking and all-around bad writing, including the resurrection of Admiral Daala and the death of Gilead Pellaeon.

Credentials
Karen Traviss has attempted to present her previous jobs with the Royal Navy Auxiliary Service and the Territorial Army as credentials for why her outline of the force structure for the Grand Army of the Republic is acceptable from a military point of view. The RNXS appears to have operated in a FEMA-like role for harbor evacuations, and her description of her duties indicates that she was a deck seaman. In the United States Navy, these are the least qualified personnel, not trusted even to cook. She then served "briefly" in the Territorial Army as a media specialist. As she did not serve in a significant capacity in a combat arms branch, her military credentials cannot reasonably be used to justify her proposed Grand Army of the Republic force structure.

In Cauda Venenum
She once threatened to "rip out the tracheas" of her critics, which seems to be an odd comment for a "media specialist" to make.
Latest News
Star Wars Order 66: A Republic Commando Novel came out September 16th.
She has written a novelization of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie.

The Klingon Bird of Prey is a type of vessel that has seen service in the Klingon Empire for almost a century. It has become a ubiquitous warship of the empire used in a wide variety of missions, such as spying, reconnaissance, commerce raiding, and combat. Birds of Prey proved quite effective even during the Dominion War, where they fared well against the mainstay of the Dominion fleet - the Jem'Hadar Attack ship.

One cannot think Klingon without immediately thinking of these vessels.

Technical Specifications
There are actually two distinct classes of Klingon Bird of Prey.

Scout model
The scout model bird of prey, sometimes erroneously referred to as the B'Rel class, was most frequently encountered during the TOS movie era and DS9. It is a small, agile and very light craft with a crew between 12 and 36. The class was first encountered on screen during the Genesis Incident, when Captain Kruge took his Bird of Prey deep into Federation space and destroyed the USS Grissom and ambushed and crippled the USS Enterprise. Pavel Chekov detected the Bird of Prey for a moment on the scanners before she cloaked and identified her as a "scout class vessel" (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock). Sulu verified that the crew compliment of as about a dozen. The Bird of Prey in the movie novelization is described as a Klingon fighter.

Cruiser model
The cruiser model is a far heavier vessel designed to go toe-to-toe with Federation starships. The class was first identified as such by Wesley Crusher during an attack by three K'Vort-cruisers on the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-C in "Yesterday's Enterprise". Identical ships, under Ferengi control, were later identified as B'Rel class in "Rascals".

Common Features
Despite the differences in size and combat role, all Klingon Birds of Prey share certain common features.

* Cloaking device - every Bird of Prey is equipped with a cloaking device. During the Genesis incident, the cloaking device on Kruge's vessel created a visible distortion effect, especially when the ship was in motion. No similar distortion effect has been seen in any other cloaked Bird of Prey, which could indicate that Kruge's cloak was an inferior model or malfunctioning at the time.

* Disruptor cannons - both variations of the Bird of Prey carry rapid-fire disruptor cannons in their wingtips. A steady fusillade from these cannons could destroy a Dominion fighter in a single salvo.

* Photon torpedoes - every Bird of Prey has a torpedo tube located in the bow. An "emergency tube" was mentioned during the ship's first appearance but quickly forgotten.

* Variable-geometry wing design - the angle of the wings of Bird of Prey is variable. What role the various wing positions play is unknown, as the Birds of Prey have been observed to attack in all wing positions: raised above the hull, parallel to the hull, and down below the hull.

Atmospheric Flight
The scout model has one feature that is not confirmed in the cruiser model. The scout can safely enter a planet's atmosphere and land on the surface. There is one instance where cruisers may have exhibited atmospheric capabilities. During the Dominion War, an attack led by General Martok against a Dominion base on Trekla V shows Birds of Prey decloaking and strafing a base on the surface. There is no mention of the class of these vessels, but the fact that they later engaged Cardassian capital ships -- and Kor commanded a single Bird of Prey in a suicide attack on 10 Dominion fighters -- suggests that this was a cruiser. (DS9, "Once more Unto the Breach")

History
In-universe, the modern Bird of Prey was the result of a design evolution extending back to the 22nd century. The earliest Bird of Prey shown lacked the cloaking device, but possessed the same characteristic head-body-wings design.(ENT, "The Expanse")

The Klingon Bird of Prey was first depicted during the Genesis incident in which it was instantly recognized by Sulu when decloaking suggesting the vessel was already in service for some time by the time it made its appearance in Star Trek III.

The Bird of Prey soon replaced the Klingon D-7 and the K'T'Inga class cruisers as the standard Klingon warship generally encountered by Starfleet during the Motion Picture era of Star Trek and even during TNG era it was an extremely common vessel probably produced in massive numbers given the inordinate amount of Birds of Prey encountered as opposed to other Klingon warships.

Out of universe note on the nomenclature of the Klingon ship, in early drafts of Star Trek III Kruge was supposed to steal a Romulan Bird Of Prey and use its cloaking device to carry out his illegal mission into Federation space but over time the vessel became a Klingon ship; however, the class name never changed. The Romulan connection is still visible in the feather pattern on the bottom of the hull, reminiscent of the Romulan Bird of Prey.
The United Kingdom from 1600 was a prominent European nation, creating colonies which would latter become nations such as the United State, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and by the early 19th century, britian was the most powerful nation on earth. The United Kingdom also laid the foundations for much of the world's current democratic tradtions, developed much in the line of technology, started the industrial revolution and contributed much in the lines of science (Netwonian Physics and Evolution by means of natural selection being big on the list) and culture.

Turbolasers are the primary energy weapons mounted on ships in Star Wars. These weapons are usually placed on starships, space stations, and sometimes, as ground defense turrets. Normally, they consist of an invisible lightspeed beam with visible bolt that travels along the beam.

Nature
For years, the nature of turbolasers had been a mystery to technical debaters, as the behavior of the bolts does not coincide with any real-life phenomena.

Old Ideas
A naive interpretation of the name "turbolaser" led many to believe they were simply pulses of photons. In technical circles, this idea was derided due to the obviously slower-than-light propagation of the visible bolt.

Attempts to explain the behavior typically included the idea of a plasma bolt somehow contained by a magnetic jacket. There was no explanation for how the supposed magnetic containment field was maintained, nor could the supporters explain the purpose of the plasma given the energy requirements of the containment field itself. Nor could it explain instances of the target receiving damage before the bolt impacted.

Various printed sources attempted to explain the nature of turbolasers and blasters, but the various descriptions conflicted with each other.

In the end, everyone had to simply agree that the nature of the bolts was unknown.

Current Understanding
The release of Attack of the Clones: Incredible Cross-Sections spurred more research into the nature of turbolasers. Dr. Curtis Saxton asserts that turbolasers consist of an invisible lightspeed beam that is the primary damaging component and that the visible, slower-than-light bolt traveled along the beam as waste glow.

Some initially considered the description silly and dismissed it. Obviously, they thought, the delay between the activation of the weapon and the destructive output (which usually coincides with the arrival of the bolt) means that the weapon's output did not travel at lightspeed.

Others proposed that a turbolaser cannon fired a weak beam that ramps up in power, and that the visible bolt's apparent velocity is timed by the targeting computer to arrive at the target when the cannon's beam had finally ramped up to a damaging output level. The Ramp-Up Theory was born.

The Ramp-Up Theory explains several peculiar instances of turbolaser behavior:
*Bolt vector redirection from an ISD firing on an asteroid (if the beam is redirected, the bolt must travel along the changing path of the beam)
*A turbolaser bolt fired by the Executor harmlessly travels through an A-wing (the beam was still ramping up)
*Damage before impact on an asteroid (mistimed bolt meant the beam ramped up enough to be destructive before the bolt arrived)
*Relatively consistent timing between firing and impact (typically 3 or 4 frames), regardless of range
*Bolts remaining in front of Wedge's X-wing in Return of the Jedi despite the X-wing pulling up (another instance of bolt vector changing in mid-flight)

The description found in the AotC:ICS agrees with various other printed sources, as well. For example, Shadows of the Empire mentions an invisible beam with an ionized marker.

Power
The turbolasers found on the Acclamator-class are rated at 200 gigatons per shot in the AOTC:ICS.

The main turbolasers of a Venator class Star Destroyer have a maximum combined output of approximately 860 teratons per second (RotS:ICS).

Various calculations have been performed on turbolaser power over the years. Some were conservative estimates based on the destruction of asteroids in The Empire Strikes Back. Others were based off of the energy required to perform a Base Delta Zero operation.
The Nebula-class is a type of starship built by the Federation in the 24th century in Star Trek. The design's major features (saucer, engineering hull and warp nacelles) are similar to those of the Galaxy-class starship, but are arranged differently. The class lacks the Galaxy's connecting neck, and the saucer and engineering hull are therefore directly connected, and the nacelles are mounted below the engineering hull instead of above it. Two major sub-classes of Nebula have been observed; the Phoenix type, with an aft hull attachment resembling the radome of an AWACS aircraft, and the Sunderland type, with an attachment containing photon torpedo launchers. In 2374, the Nebula-class was capable of Warp 9.9. (VGR: Message In A Bottle)
*If we look at the DS1 compared to the DS2 in terms of volume, the DS2 is roughly 177 times larger than the DS1. I don't know where this "twice the size" shit came from. Even the diameter is around 5 and a half times larger. Also, it didn't take the Empire 20 years to make the DS1, they had a lot of prototypes and research completed in that 20 years, so maybe we should change that. -- Lord Relvenous
I think the Battle of Endor, along with the Battle of Naboo, Yavin, and Hoth should each be their own separate page. Mainly because there is a lot of information about those battles and even some speculation (such as how Star Trek might have fared in their shoes) which only fits under that topic. I took the time to do a volume comparision of the two death stars, assumed that there was a similar power output per cubic meter of volume, and crunched the numbers to get the results. Also, it didn't take the Empire 20 years to make the DS1, they had a lot of prototypes and research completed in that 20 years, so maybe we should change that. -- Lord Relvenous
Although described as a "space station", the Death Star is a actually moon-sized starship, one of the largest in the Star Wars universe. Armed with a terrifying superlaser capable of destroying an entire planet, regardless of defenses, it was intended to be a symbol of 'control through fear' in the Tarkin Doctrine. The first Death Star was used by Grand Moff Tarkin to destroy Princess Leia's home planet of Alderaan.
Historical Account
The plans for the Death Star were first mentioned in Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones. Toward the end, as the Trade Federation leaders were fleeing Geonosis, Count Dooku was given the technical schematics which would later go on to become the Death Star I. These plans were taken by Count Dooku to Darth Sidious, the Sith lord. Full scale construction on the Death Star would not begin for many years, however. Practical application of so many new technologies required a great deal of research and development first.

Early development of the Death Star was slow and frequently hampered by ill-fated sabotage efforts. Many of those working on the project or aware of its existence doubted its completion. Effective research and development was not possible under the current work conditions. Moff Tarkin, in an effort to combat this fact, recruited or forced a small number of scientists to work on its development in a new installation set in the middle of a cluster of black holes, the Maw installation. It was here that the many breakthroughs necessary for the completion of the Death Star occurred, namely a fully operation superlaser.

After the completion and demonstration of a workable prototype of the Death Star in the Maw Cluster, Bevel Lemelisk, one of the main researchers and developers, took the plans to the Outer Rim world Despayre. The metal needed for the construction was mined from this world by slaves. Bevel Lemelisk then oversaw the construction of the first Death Star above Despayre. To mark its completion and test the superlaser, Despayre, the cradle world of the Death Star, was destroyed.

The Destruction of the First Death Star
Shortly after its completion and declassification, a rebel mercenary, Kyle Katarn, stole a set of the plans from the imperial data vault located on Denauta. These plans were transmitted to rebels on Toprawa. These plans were combined with similar data obtained by Keyan Farlander and other spies to produce a complete schematic of the Death Star.

After its use on Alderaan in an attempt to coerce the location of the Rebel base out of Princess Leia Organa, Darth Vader placed a tracking device on the Millennium Falcon, the ship used by Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, and Obi-Wan Kenobi to board the Death Star, rescue Princess Leia, and escape. The Death Star followed this tracking signal to the Yavin system, where the Rebel base was located on Yavin IV. Using the schematics constructed from the data obtained by Kyle Katarn and Keyan Farlander, rebel strategists had found a weakness in the battle station: a small auxiliary exhaust port located under the larger main exhaust port. If a proton torpedo was shot into this port, it could follow it in a direct line to the hypermatter reactor located in the core of the Death Star. This would set off what has been described vaguely as a "chain reaction", destroying the Death Star. Whether this phrase refers to a chain reaction located solely within the reactor or one throughout all the systems of the Death Star is unknown. Many believe it refers solely to the reactor due to the instantaneous destruction of the Death Star, but no consensus has been reached, and no statement has been made by George Lucas or any of his affiliated companies.

Small snubfighters were launched in squadrons in an attack at the Death Star. To reach the exhaust port they were required to advance down a trench of the Death Star, after destroying shield towers which prevented entry. The vast majority of the pilots sent on this mission were shot down by turbolaser towers, opposing fighters, or Darth Vader himself, piloting an Advanced TIE. Luke Skywalker was eventually able to successfully make the shot, and the Death Star was destroyed, killing Tarkin and many of the political and military elite of the Empire.

Calculations
The Death Star's main superlaser is shown in to be capable of destroying an entire planet. This feat requires, at the absolute minimum, that the gravitational binding energy of the planet be overcome by the power of the weapon. That is, the weapon adds enough energy to the planet to scatter its mass quickly enough so that the planet's self-gravity is unable to pull it back together. The minimum energy for this task is within the range of 2.2e32 - 3.7e32 J, with 2.4e32 J being the most likely figure, as revealed on Mike Wong's Death Star Firepower page.

Observation of the destruction of Alderaan shows that the planet explodes violently, the main debris field expanding somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 km/s, or 3-5%c. Assuming a simplistic distribution of velocities from 0 to ~4%c reveals this feat to require on the order of 1e38 J, or the amount of energy that the Sun produces in eight thousand years.

The Second Death Star
Immediately after the destruction of the Death Star, Palpatine demanded that the station be reconstructed. A station such as the Death Star was integral to the Tarkin Doctrine, in which fear rather than direct control rules the population. The Death Star II was not going to be a direct carbon copy of the original. Many design flaws that had been present in the first Death Star, including the small exhaust port that facilitated its destruction, were to be corrected. Also, Emperor Palpatine wanted a larger, more powerful station.

Bevel Lemelisk, the original Death Star's designer, also oversaw the design and construction of the Death Star II. Although he had been executed for the design flaws in the original Death Star, Palpatine cloned him and set him to task of redesigning the Death Star's original plans, correcting the flaws that had been in the Death Star.

As a result of this retooling, the Death Star II was a much different station, namely in size. The original Death Star was 160 km in diameters, the Death Star II's diameter was 900 km. This made the Death Star II 177 times larger in volume than the original. Also, the 2 m wide exhaust port the Rebels used to destroy the first station was now millions of millimeter wide holes spaced evenly across the entire surface of the station. This ports were also designed to close immediately if any excess energy was detected. Also, the turbolaser towers located on the surface of the station were increased in number and also given new targeting systems, making them more effective at targeting snubfighters on low-level flight paths, a duty they failed horribly at on the first Death Star. a further improvement, and probably the most important at the Battle of Yavin, was a complete redesigning of the superlaser. The first Death Star's superlaser was capable of destroying planets, but had a 24 hour recharge time, and no variable setting. The Death Star II was given a superlaser with much greater capabilities and flexibility. The superlaser was capable of off-axis firing, or firing at targets not directly lined up with the crater shaped firing area. Also, the superlaser was given variable settings and improved tracking and targeting systems, giving it the capability to fire at capital ships, an ability used judiciously at the Battle of Endor.

Construction
Since the majority main technical and development problems potentially encountered by the Empire in the construction of the second Death Star had been solved during the construction of the first Death Star, the Death Star II was built on a much quicker time scale, taking only two to three years to construct, despite its huge size and complexity.

The second Death Star's original construction site is not known; it was successfully kept a secret form Alliance spies. The Death star II was moved from its original construction area to the Endor system, located on the Outer Rim, because of the heavy concentration of metals and required resources on the worlds of that system. The Death Star II was put in geosynchronous orbit around the forested Sanctuary Moon, protected by a shield projected by a moon-based shield generator. All resources not obtainable in the local system were secretly shipped in using many carriers. One of these carriers was the personal transport company of Prince Xizor, who passed on the location of the second Death Star to the rebels.

Rebel Discovery of the Death Star II
Information used in locating the Death Star II came from many different sources, including imperial defectors and Prince Xizor. The majority of the information however, including the fact that the massive construction project was the construction of a second Death Star, came from a captured computer, stolen from an Imperial freighter. Bothan hackers decrypted the information and learned of the existence of the Death Star II, and also its location.

After learning of this information, Bothan spies were able to infiltrate the construction in the Endor system on three freighters. They confirmed the existence of the Death Star II, its shielding, and its state on progress. They also learned that its superlaser was not operational, a fact which proved to be false. The freighters were discovered and two destroyed, with the lone escaping freighter relaying the information to the Rebel Alliance.

The Rebels would go on to act on this information and destroy the Death Star II during The Battle of Endor.

Starfleet is the exploratory and military body of the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek.

Mission
Starfleet's official mission is exploration: "To seek out new life and new civilizations -- to boldly go where no one has gone before." Consequently, Starfleet vessels carry large quantities of scientific equipment, and large portions of their crews are researchers.

Despite its stated mission, however, Starfleet is also solely responsible for the defense of the Federation. In addition to science equipment, Starfleet vessels are heavily armed and shielded, making them formidable opponents for the other Alpha Quadrant powers.

Military Readiness
Despite access to some of the most powerful combat ships in the Alpha Quadrant, the Federation remains poorly prepared for a military emergency. While powerful individually, their fleet assets are so few and so scattered that they frequently have few or no ships in position to respond to a military emergency. Worsening the situation, Starfleet command generally sees defense as a secondary function at best, so they require no military exercises to maintain the combat skills of their crews.

Worse still, as the Federation's only defense organization, Starfleet is responsible for ground combat operations as well, and the preparedness of their ground troops is even more obviously inadequate.

Fleet Size
Some trektards insist that the "NCC" hull numbers on starships are indicative of the number of vessels in active service, which would mean Starfleet numbers roughly 50,000 ships.
However, in real-life navies, new hull numbers are created as new ships are built, instead of being reapplied to newly built vessels. Therefore, smaller numbers are more reasonable.

Starfleet fielded several thousand vessels during the Dominion War, having been given three years advance warning of the Dominion threat, but on other occasions has had severe difficulty mustering more than a few dozen ships against an unexpected attack.
