The US Army had it's origins in the colonial Continental Army during the [[American Revolutionary War]].  The army had a rather rocky start, as it began using a majority of volunteer "Minuteman" militia units that were not able to fight on an extended basis.  Under the Continental Congress, a more formal army was organized under the command of George Washington.
