Fuzzy

1994

This was Fuzzy as a little puppy. He was so small! And he had already grown quite a bit by the time this picture was taken. When we first got him, he couldn't even climb stairs because his little legs weren't long or powerful enough.

We were living in a tiny town called Wallaceburg at the time this picture was taken, in a tiny little two-bedroom house. It wasn't much, but it was our little love nest and we were happy.

This picture was taken when we were still in Wallaceburg but in a bigger place, and Fuzzy was already full-grown. He's even helping Rebecca read :)
1996

This picture was taken in another tiny town called Port Lambton. Matthew had already been born by this time, but Fuzzy still got lots of attention because Matthew wasn't as demanding back then as he is now.

If we had known back then what we know now, we wouldn't have taken Matthew's relatively low demands for granted. But as they say, hindsight is 20/20. Experience is a hard teacher. No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. School of hard knocks. I think I'm running out of cliches, so I'll stop now.

Hey, what's that? Can I eat it?

This picture was taken in Sombra. Fuzzy and Matthew were virtually inseparable. They did everything together, even crawling around the house on all fours.

If there's one thing that a dog can't get enough of, it's sleep. Doesn't it seem like it'd be nice to have a dog's life sometimes? Sleep 14 hours a day, have your food and shelter provided for you, and if you're lucky, your master will bring a bitch for you now and then!
Fuzzy, meet David. The newest addition to our family. We know you'll take good care of him. Image

Fuzzy in Mississauga. Dogs don't show their age very obviously, but if you look at his appearance and the way he carries himself, you can see he's getting older. Sadly, he's only got a couple of years left at this point.

It's Fuzzy, the Christmas dog!

Fuzzy, walking around the soccer pitch before one of David's games. Little did we know at the time that this would be one of our last pictures of him.

Our little Fuzzy passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the age of thirteen and a half years. He suffered a cardiac arrest at the animal hospital after having both late-stage heart disease and lymphatic cancer for months. In a sense, we were lucky that his heart gave out when it did, because it means that the cancer never got him. In his last couple of weeks, he became very lethargic as his heart weakened, and his heart stopped around noon on that last day.

I suppose I'm lucky. I was lucky to have my little friend for more than 13 years, and I was lucky that I was able to scratch him behind the ear one last time on that fateful day. My little friend went without suffering, which is all I could have asked for.

Goodbye, little buddy. We'll never forget you.
