| This was taken shortly after David was born in 1998 (in our own home with a midwife this time, since we'd had our fill of the hospital birthing experience). The birth went beautifully; it was quick, like Matthew's birth, but it was nowhere near as stressful. David was born with some hair, although not as thick as Matthew's hair. However, his hair seemed to be a temporary phenomenon. It mostly fell out, leaving our little guy as bald as a billiard ball. Unfortunately, David was a colicky baby, which was quite a shock after Matthew. While Matthew seemed to love sleep, David seemed capable of two hour sleeping stints at most, which were usually followed by bouts of screaming. This was a very hard time for Rebecca, who was breast-feeding David (just as she had breast-fed Matthew). But she's much stronger than she gives herself credit for, and she weathered the storm. I can lift much heavier weights than Rebecca can. I can run faster, jump higher, and throw farther. Some would call that "superior strength", but I know that I never could have done what she did, either in childbirth or in David's sleepless first six months. That was "superior strength". | ![]() |

Fuzzy is such a good dog. The boys push him around but he's not resentful. He still watches over them like the protective, loyal little fuzzball that he is. Even David, who has not been kind to him. People often speak of "unconditional love" but if you want to see truly unconditional love, get a dog. What else could you expect, from Man's best friend? |
| Check out the maniacal look in his eye. We knew from the start that David would be a troublemaker, and you can see it in this picture, taken in 1999. He gets into trouble. He destroys things (big things; he took out a 27" TV set at the age of 2!). He drives his brother crazy. He's demanding, headstrong, and stubborn ... (sniff, sniff) he's a chip off the old block! | ![]() |

When David's in a good mood, he's a real crowd pleaser, and he's a lot of fun to be around. Unfortunately for me, David's good moods are rare and transient when Rebecca's not around. He loves his Mommy, and there appear to be no substitutes. |

| David on the couch, watching a movie in 2003. The boys have watched very little TV in their lives, but they've watched lots of movies. Personally, I don't think that TV programming is necessarily bad for kids, although you obviously have to be discriminating with the kind of material they watch. But what's really bad for kids is the advertising. | ![]() |

| David at the butterfly conservatory in Niagara region in 2005. Yes, that's a real butterfly, and it landed right on his hat just in time for me to snap a picture. | ![]() |
