Cool Links

Linux World   Take a wild guess. Other Linux sites (apart from the distribution home pages such as Red Hat, SuSE, and Mandrake) include Slashdot, Linux Today, the Linux Documentation Project, and of course, the Samba, Sitecopy, and Lame home pages.

The Onion   A popular satirical news site (they lost some of their edge after the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack, but hopefully they'll regain their form). If on-line humour's your bag, you might also want to check out Satire Wire (which has been much funnier than the prestigious Onion lately), as well as BB Spot, which specializes in computer geek humour.

Rotten Tomatoes   This place links to all kinds of film reviews; rather than giving you just one critic's opinion, it gives you a ton of links to all sorts of critics (which may or may not be useful, depending on your opinion of film critics). Their "tomato-meter" gives an indication of how the consensus opinion tends to stack up among reviewers.

The Digital Bits   The leading on-line source of information about the latest DVD releases.

Pathfinders Design and Technology   These guys sell the coolest kids' education toys around. Ever wanted to build a wooden trebuchet? You can get a kit here.

Reuters   Everybody goes to CNN when they want on-line news. But CNN is shit; they filter everything through a narrow-minded editorial focus and they editorialize constantly while pretending to be impartial (much like Time Magazine, with whom they are now affiliated). Reuters does a much better job of maintaining the substance rather than the mere illusion of journalistic neutrality in my opinion.

The CSS descrambler gallery   Professor Touretzky's famous act of defiance against the assault on free speech known as the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act, also known as Damned Microsoft Corporate Authoritarianism).

Movie gun mishaps   Yes, it's an incredibly comprehensive list of mistakes made with guns in the movies. I don't know why I find this so interesting, but I do.

Is Bill Gates the Antichrist?   Yes, it's a site which compares Bill Gates to the AntiChrist prophecies in the Bible. The funniest part of all is the bit where they add up the ASCII codes for BILL GATES and get 663. But since he's Bill Gates the Third, his name is actually BILL GATES III, which adds up to 666! I laughed my ass off when I saw this one.

Adult DVD Reviews   Just what the name implies. These guys' opnions are not 100% reliable (it's not as if they're the Siskel and Ebert of the porno world, and let's face it; personal tastes in porno vary even more wildly than they do in mainstream movies), but it's certainly better than marching into an adult video store and renting or buying a video based only on the box. Another review site (albeit of lower quality in my opinion) is DVD Porn Reviews, and there's also RAME, which has no real editorial standards at all (but they've got the most comprehensive database of reviews).
