TNG Season 2, Ep# 31: "The Schizoid Man"

PULASKI VO: Medical log, Stardate 42437.5. Ira Graves is arguably the greatest human mind in the known universe... for years he's lived in near isolation on a remote planet, devoting full time to his revolutionary work ...

Culture: first Doctor Manheim, and now Ira Graves. Renowned Federation scientists seem to enjoy living in isolation, but luckily for them, communist societies such as the Federation (and the former Soviet Union) tend to reward military officers and scientists the way capitalist societies reward entrepreneurs.

TNG Season 2, Ep# 31: "The Schizoid Man"

(Troi drinks an exotic liquid in Ten Forward)

TROI: It's wonderful. What is it?

GUINAN: A year on the planet Thurasia is four hundred and ninety days long. It rains twice, and only twice. You're drinking Thurasian rain water.

GEORDI: Water? Tastes more like...

TROI: Heaven.

GEORDI: Exactly. Where can I get some more of this?

GUINAN: 'Fraid that's the last of it. Next rainfall in a hundred and sixty three days.

Replicators: they can't accurately replicate some unusual rain water, eh? As Spock would say, that's ... fascinating.

TNG Season 2, Ep# 31: "The Schizoid Man"

WORF: Suggest we execute long range transport of away team to assist Dr. Graves at earliest possible moment. We can use the mass of the planet to slingshot us toward the stricken liner, thus making up most of the lost time.

Propulsion: their impulse speed is so low that the gravitational acceleration of a nearby Earth-like planet would make up most of the time lost by slowing down to transport an away team to the surface, allowing them to reach a stricken liner before its passengers die.

TNG Season 2, Ep# 31: "The Schizoid Man"

WORF: Suggest we execute long range transport of away team to assist Dr. Graves at earliest possible moment. We can use the mass of the planet to slingshot us toward the stricken liner, thus making up most of the lost time.

Transporters: this is considered a "long range" transport even though the ship is so close to the planet that it is significantly accelerated by its gravitational field.

TNG Season 2, Ep# 31: "The Schizoid Man"

PULASKI: I checked twice to make certain ... you have Varnay's disease. I'm sorry, Ira. You're dying, and there's nothing I can do about it.

Misc: yet another terminal disease, hundreds of years after they've supposedly vanquished disease.
