Japanese Armored Fighting Vehicles 1920-1946

NOTES: The Japanese AFV and Infantry Arms list differs signficantly from OTL due to several influences.

1.) Experience in fighting against the Taiping Chinese, who have tanks supplied from the Soviet Union and do not break and run at the first sign of trouble, unlike the Nationalist/Communist Chinese formations of OTL. This means the Japanese do not pick up the bad habits that they picked up in OTL; which were:

A.) A plane with a few rifle calibre MGs and a couple of bombs a bit more powerful than hand grenades are good for air support
B.) Head-on charges will break the enemy every time.

2.) The Draka have been supplying them with raw materiel since the 1920s. This means that Japan is significantly richer than in OTL, and does not have to have scrap metal drives in peacetime. This translates into generally newer equipment across the board for all Japanese units, there are much less examples of Russo-Japanese War era artillery in IJA units than in OTL.

This generally means that Pacific Fighting in the Drakaficverse is much nastier, much more bloody for the US Army and Marine Corps than it was in OTL, as the Japanese have both heavier and better armament than in OTL, but also much improved tactical level fighting skills and organization due to combat experience against Taiping China.

NOTES: Based upon a early Drakian Hond III prototype that Japan bought the rights to license produce in Japan. Along the way, it ceased to be a carbon copy of the Hond III prototype and became something uniquely Japanese. The most notable change was the replacement of the Drakian 50mm L42 gun was replaced with the larger, but lower velocity Japanese 75mm Type 94 L38 gun, which was more effective at throwing high explosive shells than the 50mm gun, as destroying Chinese infantry formations was seen as a higher priority at the time than destroying Chinese tanks.

Type 95B (1937ish in DF)
42 km/h maximum speed
4 man crew
75mm Type 97 L58
36 Tons Combat Weight
70mm Effective Hull Front

NOTES: Introduced hastily in 1937 to combat the rising numbers of Chinese heavy tanks, the Type 95B had a completely redesigned turret which could accomodate the Type 97 75mm gun, which was itself a copy of of the Bofors M29 75mm Anti-Aircraft gun, which had been captured from the Taipings and reverse engineered for production in Japan.

Warhammer7K: when doing there Tank ORBAT remember over the Marco Polo Bridge

MKSheppard: kek kek kek

Warhammer7K: there a lot better

Warhammer7K: yet have a long barrel 75 already

Maj Svetlanna: Yes.

MKSheppard: He's useful at times :-P

Maj Svetlanna: Of course, those are Jap-built copies of Drakian tanks.

Maj Svetlanna: Think of them as sort of like stripped down export T-72s.

Maj Svetlanna: Versions of the top-line Draka model thereof.

or re-read the whole story has info on the Japanese TOE of the mid-1930's

Warhammer7K: you can work from there

Warhammer7K: and the Soviet T-28 is there :P

Warhammer7K: but every so often they'd get sight of a T-28, the Soviet tank that was endemic to service in the Taiping Army, or a BT-5 light.

Warhammer7K: probally could say it was mostly exported to pro-soviet nations

Warhammer7K: another thing for the ORBAT :P

Warhammer7K: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-28

MKSheppard: So mari.

Maj Svetlanna: Yes?

MKSheppard: What's the primary Jap reason for attacking the US.

MKSheppard: I know they DOWed the British Empire over the entire DEI brohouha

Maj Svetlanna: Philippines.

MKSheppard: was it a case of "the US will support the UK anyway, so lets take them out now?"

Maj Svetlanna: Essentially the same reason it was historically.

Maj Svetlanna: Which is that the philippines are a base in the middle of the Jap

Maj Svetlanna: supply lines to the DEIs.

Maj Svetlanna: So we can cut the DEIs off from Japan whenever we feel like it.

Maj Svetlanna: So the American presence in the Philippines has to be eliminated

Maj Svetlanna: to secure control over the DEI's.

Maj Svetlanna: That's, incidentally, the actual strategic justification

Maj Svetlanna: for war with the USA OTL, not just in the Drakafic.

Maj Svetlanna: The main Japanese goal was never a confrontation with the USA,

Maj Svetlanna: they just wanted a quick war to seize the Philippines and the Marianas

Maj Svetlanna: and then make peace,

Maj Svetlanna: since their real target was the DEI's, Burma, etc.

Maj Svetlanna: The Japanese actually met all of their war aims except for conquering China.

Maj Svetlanna: Unique among the Axis powers.

Maj Svetlanna: That's part of why the Japanese combat abilities trail off so abruptly.

Maj Svetlanna: They didn't mobilize for a major war

Maj Svetlanna: until after Midway.

Maj Svetlanna: They had no reason to, since their initial lunge had actually

Maj Svetlanna: conquered everything it was supposed to.

Maj Svetlanna: Remember that the Japs would keep around that old artillery,

Maj Svetlanna: though, and use it in pillboxes

Maj Svetlanna: and so on in island fortifications.
