Whats this about the EU

Now I like star wars, but alas besides the great video game series and some accompaning tech manuals, I am not really that familiar with te expanded universe except for admiral thrawn.

Now I have heard references to teh EU, is this the same Soviet EUnion thats sprawling across the face of the europe in a pitiful attempt to counterbalance American Hegemony with deranged 3rd way politics? Or is it some other hoplessly corrupt Star Wars international organization modeling itself after that dammed organization which is reaslly the Holy Roman Empire reborn without the Christian conotations?
